Dielectric material

Surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitor: using liquid electrolyte as the electrolyte, a conductive

 path is formed between the positive and negative plates through the electrolyte.

Solid state electrolytic capacitor: using conductive polymer as the electrolyte, it solidifies into a solid 

state without any liquid components.

Electrode design

Surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitor: The positive electrode material is aluminum foil, and 

the surface is anodized to form an aluminum oxide dielectric layer. The negative electrode conducts 

electricity through the electrolyte.

Solid state electrolytic capacitor: The positive electrode is also made of aluminum foil, but the dielectric 

layer is more tightly combined with the solid polymer material to avoid the evaporation problem of liquid 

electrolyte.

2、 Performance comparison

Lifespan and stability

Surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitors: Liquid electrolytes are easily affected by high temperatures 

or long-term use, leading to capacity decay or drying up, and have a short lifespan (usually thousands

 of hours).

Solid state electrolytic capacitors: Solid state electrolytes have high stability, strong high-temperature 

resistance, and a lifespan of 5-10 times that of surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitors (tens of 

thousands of hours or more).

Temperature resistance and reliability

Surface mounted aluminum electrolytic capacitors: with a narrow operating temperature range (usually 

-40 ℃~105 ℃), they are prone to bursting or failure due to electrolyte evaporation at high temperatures.

Solid state electrolytic capacitors: have a wider temperature resistance range (-55 ℃~260 ℃), no risk of 

volatilization in solid media, strong physical pressure resistance, and higher reliability.

High frequency characteristics

Surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitor: With a high equivalent series resistance (ESR), the impedance 

increases at high frequencies and the filtering effect decreases, making it suitable for mid to low frequency 

circuits.

Solid state electrolytic capacitor: with extremely low ESR (can be as low as 0.1 Ω or below), excellent high-frequency 

impedance characteristics, suitable for high-frequency filtering and low voltage high current scenarios.

3、 Application scenarios

Surface mounted aluminum electrolytic capacitor

Advantages: Low cost, large capacity (up to thousands of μ F), suitable for scenarios such as power filtering 

and low-frequency coupling.

Disadvantage: Not suitable for high frequency, high temperature, or long-term stable operating environments, 

polarity installation should be noted.

Solid state electrolytic capacitor

Advantages: No risk of slurry explosion, high ripple current resistance, long lifespan, suitable for high 

reliability equipment such as motherboard power supply, graphics cards, digital products, etc.

Disadvantages: Small capacity range (usually below 1000 μ F), high cost.

4、 Other differences

Environmental friendliness: Solid state capacitors do not contain acidic electrolytes, making the production 

and use process more environmentally friendly.

Volume: Solid state capacitors have a smaller volume at the same capacity, which is beneficial for high-density 

circuit design.

Summary: Surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitors have the advantages of low cost and large 

capacity, and are suitable for conventional filtering scenarios; Solid state electrolytic capacitors have 

long lifespan, high stability, and high-frequency performance as their core competitiveness, making them
