of electronic detonators directly affects the reliability, safety, and system cost of detonation. Surface mounted 

aluminum electrolytic capacitors exhibit significant advantages in electronic detonators due to their unique

1、 The core requirement of electronic detonators for energy storage capacitors


The electronic detonator control module needs to meet the requirements of high-energy instantaneous release, 

high temperature stability, long-term standby and low leakage current. Specific requirements include:


Large capacity value: meets the energy required for detonation of the shock agent (formula: C × Δ U=I × Δ t, the 

larger the capacity value, the higher the delay time and detonation reliability);


Low ESR (equivalent series resistance): reduces energy loss at the moment of detonation (excessive ESR 

can result in 43% of energy being consumed in the resistance);


Ultra low leakage current: Ensure energy retention of the energy storage capacitor during the delay phase 

(excessive leakage current may cause explosion rejection);


High voltage resistance: adapted to the high-pressure detonation scheme of shock agents (usually requiring 

a withstand voltage of ≥ 25V);


High temperature stability: It is necessary to maintain stable performance in an environment of 55 ℃.


2、 Technical adaptability of surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitors


Capacity and volume optimization


Surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitors achieve high capacitance density through solid-state conductive 

polymer materials, such as the Fulong EFRA series. For example, a solid aluminum electrolytic capacitor 

with a capacitance of 100 μ F/25V (size Φ 5 × 8mm) has a capacitance value 50% higher than a tantalum

while surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitors achieve small volume and large capacity by optimizing the

 internal foil layer structure.


Low ESR and High Frequency Characteristics


The ESR of surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitors can be as low as 0.1 Ω or less (such as the Fulong 

EFVH series), significantly better than domestic tantalum capacitors (ESR ≥ 1.6 Ω). At the moment of detonation, 

low ESR can reduce energy loss (formula: P=RESR × I ²), ensuring that the detonation bridge wire obtains 

sufficient energy. In addition, its high-frequency characteristics, such as the low impedance of conductive 

polymer materials, can support microsecond level rapid discharge.


Leakage current control


Through solid-state electrolyte technology, the leakage current of surface mount aluminum electrolytic 

capacitors can be controlled within 1 μ A at high temperatures (55 ℃), while the leakage current of tantalum 

capacitors (such as imported tantalum F-type) can reach up to 10 μ A, accounting for more than 30% of

 the module's standby current, which can easily lead to insufficient energy storage. This feature is crucial 

for long-term standby electronic detonators.


Voltage resistance and overcurrent capability


Surface mounted aluminum electrolytic capacitors support a withstand voltage of 25V or higher (such as 

EFRA025BK101M0411), and use plate anti-oxidation technology to withstand high current surges (such 

as transient currents ≥ 2A). In contrast, tantalum capacitors are prone to cause manganese dioxide decomposition 

and explosion during overcurrent, posing a safety hazard.


3、 Advantages in practical application scenarios


Structural adaptability


The PCB of the electronic detonator needs to be placed horizontally inside the cylindrical tube shell, and 

the packaging of the surface mounted aluminum electrolytic capacitor (such as DIP 4 × 11mm) can fit the 

center layout of the tube shell cross-section, saving space (the tube shell radius can be reduced to 2.5mm).


High temperature and reliability performance


Experimental data shows that the capacitance deviation of solid-state aluminum electrolytic capacitors 

under 55 ℃/20V conditions is less than 5%, and there is no significant change in ESR. However, the leakage 

current of tantalum capacitors increases exponentially with temperature (Figure 7-9). In addition, surface 

mount technology (such as SMT reflow soldering) can improve shock resistance and sealing, and adapt

 to harsh environments such as mines and underwater environments.


Cost and Supply Chain Stability


The raw material cost of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is only 1/3 to 1/5 of that of tantalum capacitors 

(tantalum metal relies on imports). Taking Fulong Electronics as an example, its automated production

4、 Limitations and improvement directions


Low temperature performance: Liquid electrolyte may freeze below -40 ℃, and a solid-liquid hybrid capacitor 

(such as EFBR series) should be used to improve the stability of low-temperature capacitance;


Life limit: Long term high-frequency charging and discharging may accelerate electrolyte aging, requiring 

ultra long life design (such as FRK series life ≥ 10000 hours);


Polarity risk: It is necessary to strictly label the polarity (marked with black stripes) to avoid reverse voltage 

breakdown.
