The nominal lifespan of surface mount aluminum electrolytic capacitors is usually over 2000 hours

 (under rated temperature and voltage conditions), and long-life products can reach 5000-10000 hours.

 The actual service life varies greatly depending on the application conditions, and in some scenarios,

 it can reach 3-5 years or even longer.

2、 Key influencing factors

Temperature

High temperature is the main life killer:

For every 10 ° C increase, the lifespan decreases by approximately 50%; On the contrary, for every 10 ° C 

decrease in temperature, the lifespan can double.

For example, the lifespan is only 1000 hours at 85 ℃, and can reach 80000 hours at 60 ℃.

Voltage

Overvoltage can cause deterioration of the oxide film and shorten its lifespan. High voltage products 

(such as>350V) are more sensitive to voltage and require strict limits on operating voltage.

Ripple current

The internal heat generated by ripple current accelerates the evaporation of electrolyte, which needs to

 be controlled within the rated range. The larger the ripple current, the shorter the lifespan.

Capacitor quality

High quality capacitors (such as low ESR and high-purity electrolytes) can significantly extend their lifespan, 

while inferior products are prone to premature failure.

3、 Formula for calculating lifespan

The general formula is:

‌Lx = L0 × Kt × Ki × Kv‌

L0: nominal life under rated conditions (e.g. 2000 hours)

Kt: Temperature coefficient (typical value: Kt=2 for every 10 ° C decrease in temperature)

Ki: Ripple current coefficient (to be adjusted according to manufacturer's data)

Kv: Voltage coefficient (usually ignored for low voltage applications, special calculations are required for

 high voltage)

Example: For a capacitor with a rated lifespan of 1000 hours (125 ℃), its lifespan at 85 ℃ is:

Calculated based on a temperature difference of 40 ℃, the lifespan is extended by 2 ^ 4=16 times

16000 hours (approximately 1.8 years).

4、 Life extension strategy

Optimize working temperature

By designing heat dissipation or reducing the ambient temperature, the capacitor can operate within the

 range of ≤ 60 ℃.

Reduced design

Voltage derating: Choose a model with a withstand voltage that is 50% higher than the actual operating 

voltage.

Capacity redundancy: If 100 μ F is required, choose 220 μ F to compensate for aging capacity attenuation.

Choose high-quality products

Priority should be given to low ESR and long-life series (such as solid-liquid hybrid electrolytic capacitors).

Regular maintenance

Avoid long-term storage (>1 year), and charge and activate after storage to reduce leakage current.

5、 Actual lifespan difference

The nominal lifespan is only a reference value. In practical applications, if temperature, ripple current, 

and other factors are properly controlled, the lifespan can reach 8-10 years or even longer; On the contrary, 

in harsh environments, it may take less than 1 year.

Extra attention should be paid to the combined effects of voltage and ripple current in high-voltage/high-

frequency scenarios.
