How should we choose a suitable capacitor for our circuit? The following points should be considered:

Is there a shortcut to take? In fact, as a peripheral component of a device, the Datasheet or Solutions of almost every device clearly specify the selection parameters of peripheral components, which means that the basic device selection requirements can be obtained and then further refined. 

In fact, when selecting capacitors, it's not just about the capacity and packaging. The specific environment in which the product is used is also crucial. Special circuits require special capacitors.

Below is a classification of chip capacitors based on the dielectric constant of the dielectric, which directly affects the stability of the circuit. 

NP0 or CH (K < 150): 

The electrical performance is the most stable, basically not changing with temperature, voltage and time, suitable for high-frequency circuits with high stability requirements. Given the small value of K, it is difficult to have a large capacity capacitor in the 0402, 0603, and 0805 packages. For example, 0603 generally has a maximum of less than 10nF. 

X7R or YB (2000 < K < 4000): 

The electrical performance is relatively stable, and the performance does not change significantly (ΔC < ±10%) when the temperature, voltage, and time are changed. It is suitable for full-frequency discriminators that require low stability in terms of DC blocking, coupling, bypass, and capacity. 

Y5V or YF (K > 15000): 

The capacity stability is worse than that of X7R (ΔC < +20% ~ -80%), and the capacity and loss are sensitive to test conditions such as temperature and voltage. However, due to its large K value, it is suitable for applications with high capacity requirements. 

Classification of Capacitors 

There are many ways to classify and categorize capacitors, based on their material properties, which can be divided into the following categories: 

Aluminum electrolytic capacitor 

The capacitance range is 0.1μF ~ 22000μF, which is the best choice for high ripple current, long life, and large capacity. It is widely used in power supply filtering, decoupling, and other applications. 

Thin film capacitor 

The capacitance range is 0.1pF to 10μF, with small tolerances, high capacity stability, and extremely low piezoelectric effects, making it the first choice for X and Y safety capacitors and EMI/EMC applications. 

Tantalum capacitor 

The capacitance range is 2.2μF ~ 560μF, with low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and low equivalent series inductance (ESL). Pulsation absorption, transient response, and noise suppression are all superior to aluminum electrolytic capacitors, making it an ideal choice for highly stable power supplies. 

Ceramic capacitor 

The capacitance range is 0.5pF to 100μF, and the unique materials and thin film technology crystallization cater to today's design concept of "lighter, thinner, and more energy-efficient".

Supercapacitors 

The capacitance range is 0.022F to 70F, which is extremely high, so it is also known as "gold capacitor" or "farad capacitor". The main features are: ultra-high capacity, good charge/discharge characteristics, suitable for energy storage and power backup. The disadvantage is that the pressure resistance is low and the working temperature range is narrow.
